Generosity comes to mind when I think of my Mount Pleasant neighbors. I’ve met so many great people who eagerly donate both their money and time. The latter might even more precious – given all the other options that surround us here.
I’ve heard from more than one new resident that he or she would like to volunteer, but didn’t know where to begin. In honor of Giving Tuesday, I’ll start off a list with three local nonprofits that need our support. Please add your favorite local nonprofits to this list in the comments section.
East Cooper Habitat for Humanity (ECHFH) is a non-profit, Christian housing ministry that believes that every man, woman and child should have a decent, safe and affordable place to live. ECHFH assists families by building safe, well-constructed homes.
ECHFH utilizes volunteer labor and donated funds to provide a “hand up,” not a “hand out,” to its partner families. Homeowners are selected based upon their need, their demonstrated ability to handle personal finances, and their willingness to contribute a minimum of 350 “sweat equity” hours during the construction of their home. Upon completion, Habitat homes are purchased by the homeowner using an affordable mortgage. Monthly mortgage payments are then directed toward future homebuilding efforts as they are received. The Center for Birds of Prey provides avian conservation, medical treatment and scientific research that has an impact on our human environment, knowledge and health. It also offers wonderful educational experiences for local visitors and tourists. Located on Highway 17 in Awendaw, the center offers opportunities to donate, volunteer or purchase gift memberships. East Cooper Meals on Wheels delivers daily nutrition to residents who are homebound or unable to provide their own meals regardless of age or income. They also advocate on behalf of recipients whose needs exceed the scope of our program. They operate without a waiting list and there is never a charge for meals.
They also offer the Feeding Friends program which delivers meals to people in outpatient care who are recovering from surgery. Partnering with local hospitals and medical professionals, East Cooper Meals on Wheels aims to help alleviate some of the burden that falls on patients and their care givers during the recovery process.
Right now, the Roper St. Francis Physicians Endowment will match your donation. To donate, volunteer or read more, please click here.
