Cue the Bagpipes

Would you enjoy transporting yourself into a romantic episode of Outlander? Or, maybe you prefer watching enormous men in kilts throw super heavy stuff? The Scottish Games and Highland Gathering at Boone Hall Plantation has something for everyone.

It was one of the first events we attended here in the Charleston area and now I never want to miss it. Slowly driving up the avenue of oaks past all the practicing bagpipe and drum bands was magical. They would compete against each other later in the day. There were also Celtic concerts and Highland dancing – a style that dates back to the 11th century. After a visit to the beer garden, I stopped in and visited my clan tent – Clan Henderson. Later, I purchased ties in our tartan for my Dad and brother.

My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed the heavy athletics which are open to both professional and amateurs. The events include the sheaf toss, the stone of strength and, my brother David’s favorite, the caber toss. Lots of grunting, brute strength and skill were involved. For fluffier fun, there is a Border Collie herding demonstration.

You won’t be forced to chomp on haggis (the Scottish dish featuring sheep’s liver, hearts and lungs). There are lots of food and beverage options.

The beautiful backdrop of Boone Hall Plantation makes the day all the more special. This year’s event will be held on September 17th from 9am to 5pm. The event benefits the Scottish Society of Charleston, Inc. For more information, visit Boone Hall Planation’s web site.
