The city became the birthplace of American golf in 1743 when a shipment of 432 golf balls and ninety-six clubs arrived from Scotland. In 1786, Scottish merchants formed the South Carolina Golf Club on a rough field known as Harleston Green. This is where the term “green’s fee” originated.
