I’m not just talking about the Easter bunny. There’s no shortage of events each April here in the Charleston area. Here are my top three. Click on the event titles for more info.
I’m not, nor will I ever be, a runner. But I wouldn’t miss this event. While it’s a world-class 10-k foot race, walkers are welcome. Costumes are popular for both runners and those cheering along the course. Several live bands and dj’s keep the participants pumped and there’s the beautiful scenery to take in. It begins in Mount Pleasant and ends on King Street in downtown Charleston, where many recover over brunch and mimosas at favorite bars and restaurants. I’m proud to work at Carolina One Real Estate with one of the co-founders – Terry Hamlin, who was president of the Charleston Runners Club when it began in 1978.
The Charleston Cup / Steeplechase of Charleston
I love any excuse to wear a big hat and I only place bets on horses and political races. A steeplechase is my kind of spectator sport. The day-long event is held at the Plantation at Stono Ferry in Hollywood. Sixty horses compete in five races for a $90,000 in prize money. There’s even competition off course with best hat or best-dressed man.
The Low Country Strawberry Festival
The most delicious strawberries I’ve ever eaten come from the fields at Boone Hall Plantation. It’s fitting that they host this family event that includes over 30 amusement rides, acrobatic dog shows, contests and, of course, strawberry picking.
